Not many people know about or visit the Pialligo Redwood Forest. It is, however, very close to Canberra, located near the airport along the road to Queanbeyan. The forest was planted in 1918 by Canberra's designer, Walter Burley Griffin, and by Canberra's chief arborist at that time, Thomas Charles Weston. The Pialligo Redwood Forest is a good place for a picnic with your kids or for walking your dog. Although the trees are now almost 100 years old, Canberra's dry climate has prevented them from reaching the enormous size that they obtain in their native California. The forest includes specimens of California coastal redwood as well as the giant sequoia, which is native to the drier Sierra Nevada Mountains. The California Redwood grove located near Apollo Bay, Victoria, along Binns Road near Hopetoun Falls, is in many ways more impressive because it is located along a mountain stream in a high rainfall area that has permitted those trees to grow bigger, faster.
